Bioimpedance Testing

“BIA is an important clinical tool in evaluating the metabolic status of patients.  It is inexpensive and noninvasive, and it provides useful information concerning altered body composition and membrane potential at the tissue level measured by phase angle.”
Dr. Jeff Bland PhD.

What is a BIA? (And why do you need one?)

Bioelectical impedance Analysis or Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) is a method of assessing the health status of your body. It is an integral part of a health and nutrition assessment. Improving your BIA measurement by lowering your percentage of unhealthy body fat can help reduce your risk to a variety of serious health conditions.

Electrical measurements have been used as a gauge of hydration status since 1940.  Over the last several decades, this science has evolved to a level of cost-effectiveness and reproducibility that BIA can be effectively used in any health care office. In 1996, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (64 (suppl): 489S – 497S) reported that “body composition can be estimated with simple and easily applied techniques,” (BIA), “and that the estimates are sufficiently precise for use in clinical investigation and practice.”

Why is body composition important to my health?

Research has shown that body composition is directly related to health. A normal balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity. Excess fat in relation to lean body mass is a condition known as altered body composition, which allows for earlier intervention and prevention. BIA also provides a measurement of fluid and body mass that can be critical assessment tool for your current state of health.

BIA also serves to measure your progress as you work to improve your health. Improving your BIA measurement, or maintaining a health BIA measurement can help keep your body functioning properly for healthy aging and reduced risk to illness. With your BIA results, I can recommend a personalized dietary plan, nutritional supplementation and exercise to help support optimum health and well-being for a lifetime.
